Aravalli Range
The state of Rajasthan is composed of two distinct geographical regions , the dividing line being the Aravalis , the oldest mountain chains in the world . It has influenced the human and natural history of state as well as it’s geographical climatic and cultural diversities . The Western part of range is arid while the Eastern part is far greener . The Aravali spread over a lenth of about 530 Km in Rajasthan . The natural weathering agencies have worked relentlessly on these mountains and denuded them into remnants of a once great range .
The Aravalis are no longer a continous chain . These ancient orographic belt simulates a distorted hour glass ,
it’s thinnest part being to the south of Ajmer . The main peaks of Aravali are Babi (780m) , Harsh (820m) , Taragarh (914m), Sandamata (930m) , Gorum (936m) ,Kho(979m) , Ragunath(1052m) , Kumbhalgarh (1244m) , Jarghaji (1722m) , the highest peak in Mount Abu .
Passing through the left of Sambhar Lake the Aravali opens out in aa fan like fashion to form ridges and valleys in Alwar and Jaipur .Some of the plateus of Aravali are Gogunda , Kirasca , Kankwadi etc.The Aravalis divide the two main drainage system of country , draining water on western side into Arabian sea and water from eastern side into Bay Of Bengal .The Aravalis are tectonics remnants of former mountain ranges . The organic , volcanic activities made Aravali ranges rich in mineral wealth . The forest hills of the Aravali’s are enriched with flora and fauna and provide shelter to a large number and variety of animals and birds .
